MARKET VEGETABLE STALL

There are 81 public markets in Hong Kong, and vegetable stalls are usually made up of individual stalls, usually indoor or open-air, and open-air vegetable stalls, with their 'open sales', attract many customers. In the early 1940s, when diplomatic relations between China and Britain were unstable, the colonial government was worried that the Mainland would blockade Hong Kong and therefore supported the development of local agriculture in order to reduce dependence on the Mainland. In 1946, the British Hong Kong Government set up the Vegetable Marketing Organization (VMO) to manage the supply chain of vegetables, which was used by the New Territories-based Vegetable Marketing Co-operative Societies to acquire and wholesale vegetables. However, the glory days of vegetables in the New Territories came to an end in the 1980s as a result of the opening up of the Mainland and the importation of a large number of cheap vegetables into Hong Kong. As a traditional shopping destination, the market stalls are naturally bustling with activity, showing the most vibrant side of Hong Kong people.
