HONG KONG GREEN TAXI

Taxis have been operating on Hong Kong Island since the 1920s. Initially, there were two types of taxis: those that charged fares according to time and distance, and those that charged fares according to taximeters. There are three types of taxis in Hong Kong, namely, urban taxis, New Territories taxis and Lantau taxis. There are two main reasons for the classification of taxis. Firstly, as there are more passengers in the urban areas, the classification can avoid the lack of taxis in the rural areas. Secondly, since the rural areas are less accessible and residents are more dependent on taxi services, there is a need to provide a cheaper taxi service to serve the rural areas. According to the information in May 2016, there were 15,250 urban taxis, 2,838 New Territories taxis and 50 Lantau taxis in Hong Kong.
