HONG KONG SOFTEE CAR

Ice-cream trucks were introduced to Hong Kong from the UK in the 1970s. At that time, the price of a soft ice-cream was only HK$0.50. Today Hong Kong has 16 ice cream vans running around Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories. Before the handover, the British Hong Kong government imposed strict regulations on ice-cream vans, which required them to be equipped with a soft-serve machine, a hand-washing tray and two refrigerators. As there was only one soft-serve machine per van, there was only one flavour per van, usually the more popular vanilla flavour. Since the Government stopped issuing itinerant hawker licences in 1978, the number of ice-cream vans in Hong Kong has been limited to 16 vehicles.
